The cost of care can be a significant hurdle for people seeking vision rehabilitation. To ensure that these services are available to everyone who needs them, regardless of their ability to pay, the Center for the Visually Impaired has established a Financial Assistance Fund.

Funded entirely by generous friends and supporters, financial assistance helps cover the cost of low vision evaluations and rehabilitation for hundreds of low- and medium-income clients each year. We’re excited to highlight a success story from one of our clients, all made possible through donations.

Sherman’s Story

“Financial assistance made me feel like I could do more, even on a limited income.”

Sherman, 58, first visited CVI in the early 2000s for computer classes. “I’m not a real ‘techie,’” says Sherman, “but I like to listen to movies and talk to people on WhatsApp.”

After moving away for over a decade, he struggled to adjust when he returned to Atlanta. He quickly realized that he needed additional training. “I knew that CVI could help me become more independent,” he says. In addition to taking orientation and mobility lessons, Sherman was excited to jump back into technology training: “A lot had changed in those 20 years!”

Sherman says that he benefited not only from the skills his instructors taught him, but from their guidance and perspective. “Your instructors have a different point of view on vision loss than your friends and family,” he explains. “They can help you in ways that nobody else can.”
