The mission of the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) is to empower people impacted by vision loss to live with independence and dignity. This Atlanta nonprofit has been supporting low vision patients with glaucoma, macular degeneration and other eye diseases for over 60 years. During the month of October, White Cane Awareness Day is observed globally to celebrate the achievements of blind and visually impaired people. CVI will celebrate their clients’ success stories on Thursday, October 17th from 10 – 11:30 AM. The event will be held onsite at CVI located at 739 West Peachtree Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30308.
“Instruction in the use of the white cane is an essential part of the training clients receive at CVI,” explains President Lisa Kennedy, “Working with our professional staff, people with vision loss can confidently travel safely and independently in their neighborhood, across town, and other destinations.” Several CVI clients will be featured motivational speakers during the celebration sharing about how the white cane helps them daily and acts as a visual cue for sighted people to recognize a person with vision loss. Refreshments are being provided by Tiff’s Treats and Publix. The Atlanta City Council with the support of Councilman Amir Farokhi of District 2, issued a proclamation acknowledging White Cane Awareness Day in Atlanta and this will be presented to CVI during the 2024 celebration.
