May is Older Americans Month and the perfect time to reflect on healthy habits as we start summer! Center for the Visually Impaired shares three great tips for seniors and their loved ones to consider:

  • Schedule A Yearly Eye Exam: It’s hard to believe that 2024 is now half-way over! Summer is the perfect time to book an eye exam if that’s still on your 2024 to-do list. The Cleveland Clinic encourages older Americans to visit their eye doctor every year for a complete eye exam and screening. Center for the Visually Impaired is a resource for any low vision eye diseases and we can help older adults with glaucoma, age related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. We are even able to schedule a follow-up low vision eye exam onsite at some eye practices in Georgia including: North Georgia Eye in Gainesville, Georgia Retina in Gainesville, Eye Consultants of Atlanta on Cumberland Parkway, Georgia Eye Institute in Villa Ricca, Eye Physicians and Surgeons, PC in Decatur. CVI is also booking low vision exam appointments in Lawrenceville and Union City this summer. Call us at 404-875-9011 to learn more!

  • Attend a Summer Health Expo or Info Session: The CDC shares that movement, diet and managing chronic conditions all contribute to healthy vision for older Americans. Many local senior centers promote healthy aging through senior exercise group classes, scheduling summer health expos or by hosting senior educational health seminars. Center for the Visually Impaired will be sharing information about our services at these senior centers this summer:

  • Upgrade Your Sunglasses: Sunglasses are so important to block UVA and UVB rays and our CVI VisAbility Store sells cocoon polarized fit-over sunglasses that feature integrated side shields. This brand fits comfortably above any prescription eyeglasses and our team can help you find the perfect fit! VisAbility Store Manager Kelly Carmichael says, “Many of the cocoon glasses can work both indoors and outdoors for CVI clients who are looking to reduce any lighting glare because of glaucoma or macular degeneration.” Learn more about by calling our store at 404-602-4358.
