At the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI), we know that adapting to vision loss is about more than learning new skills. It’s also about finding connection, encouragement, and hope. That’s why CVI offers peer-led support groups that bring people together to share experiences, build confidence, and navigate the emotional and practical challenges of vision loss. Each group is led by a former CVI client who understands firsthand what it means to adjust to sight loss. With a structured curriculum and regular meetings, these groups provide a safe space to ask questions, share strategies, and lean on one another. For many clients, the friendships and sense of community they find here are just as important as the skills they learn.
Aaron’s Story
For Aaron, the support groups marked a turning point in his journey with vision loss. “When you’re not around people with vision loss, you’re not exposed to people who live with it every day. Coming here was like a breath of fresh air,” Aaron said. Through the groups, Aaron found connection and understanding that had been missing from his life. “I’ve made a lot of friends here that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Being around people who share the same challenges, and the same feelings of loss and grief, was a necessary part of the process. I don’t know what would have happened without this place or without those connections.”
Aaron’s experience reflects what many clients discover: that support groups can ease the isolation of vision loss and replace it with belonging and understanding.
Support Groups at CVI
CVI hosts four different support groups, each designed to meet people where they are in their journey. Three are peer-led groups for clients, and one is for family and friends who support a loved one with vision loss. In these groups, people share honest experiences, find encouragement, and learn practical strategies from others who understand.
