At the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI), we are dedicated to ensuring that our clients can live with independence and dignity, and that they can return to doing the things they love. During Low-Vision Awareness Month, CVI is recognizing the clients we serve and highlighting how the skills and tools they learn here help them continue pursuing their passions.

Paul, a 40-year-old father of three, social media content creator, and barbecue enthusiast, became legally blind at the age of nine. After years of his vision continuing to wane, he came to CVI to receive Orientation and Mobility training.

“My vision had gone downhill over the last three to four years. I was running into things and people whenever I was going out and knew I needed to make a change,” said Paul.

While receiving services, he learned how to cross streets, and use his phone and magnifiers to travel and shop independently. CVI staff also added the screen-reading function to his phone. Now, Paul utilizes the assistive technology and training he received to film and edit social media content to share his passion for barbecue with the internet.

When reflecting on his time at CVI, Paul spoke about the support he received. “Everyone at CVI wanted to help. They are there for you,” he remarked. “Whatever they can do to make your life easier, they will help with it.”
